Diagnostic Exam Day

Journey to PLE Journal # 24

Define depressing? It’s the feeling that you will immediately get upon taking the topnotch exam. So hard! ):

But then, there’s the midterms exam… I just do hope that I will not get a red card from this. Hayst!

On the lighter note, I have already moved out of our home and is currently residing in QC. Tadaa…

Selfie on my first night in my new room... (:

Well, I do hope this works for me. I have been confined in my old dorm for 9 years and it’s really quite hard to adjust to new people since I have the same roomie for those 9 wonderful years. Oh well! We’ll see.

Orientation Day

Journey to PLE Journal #22

Topnotch made their orientation for the all 5 sections today at UP Bahay ng Alumni.

The place was so jam-packed. But the benefit of it was I was able to see much friends today starting with Anne Cocos, the Feb 2014 PLE topnotcher, other college friends as well as medicine classmates and friends.

Anne Cocos giving her talk about how to pass the boards.
She will now be a Topnotch mentor. (:
Bad quality photo.Sorry!
This is Tope and Deanna. I used to be the adopted ate of their group.
Haven't seen them since after grad and I was actually not expecting to see them
today. They were enrolled in section Cambridge (Fairview) which made me
more frustrated that I was not able to be included in the Fairview section and landed
in New Manila instead.
Food trip at Diliman... Feat. Jing's Fruit Shakes

Mang Larry's Isaw
With Jess and Cynthia at Rodic's for lunch
Today is a long day but not so tiring.

Tomorrow will be our diagnostic exam and I’m sort of nervous for that. I actually feel like I do not know anything about medicine theoretically especially the basic sciences. So I’ll still hope for the best.

The first day will start soon...

Journey to PLE Journal #21

We just register for our medicine board exam review today… So this is really is it.

Registration site at Fairview Quezon City.
We opted to fill the forms in the back and then while writing we realized
that we will never manage to seat in the back row during lectures
so we have to be at the review center early.
Perks of having your review at topnotch.
They give a clipboard/file case for the handouts.
The primer is also included for steps in filling for board exam in PRC,
study guide, books to read, etc.
With my med friends. We head to Fisher Mall after registration to have
lunch and some coffee then go back to our respective homes.
The PLE review is about to start so I have to prepare for more adventures (or misadventures perhaps). I'm so excited and nervous for this. Hopefully topnotch will help us but of course the main effort in studying will still rely on my dedication and perseverance.

Lord, this I lift up to you...

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

SJDH Annual Interns case Presentation

Journey to PLE Journal # 20

Today is the Annual Case Presentation of San Juan de Dios Hospital... While the presentor say her piece I had a chance to chat with Kat, 1st year OB resident. We sort of talked about me going to have my review on May. One of the things that she said strucked me. And I quote her, "Ang lapit na. Yung review ienjoy mo ha. Ok naman yun eh kasi kahit papaano hawak mo yung oras mo basta parte partehen mo kasi madami. Basta ang isipin mo na lang e yung ibang doktor nga alam tong mga inaaral ko ngayon dapat alam ko rin! Kasi magagamit mo naman talaga sya kahit hindi man lumabas sa boards gagamitin mo din sya sa practice."

Sometimes, when you are near something that you are very aware that it will be a turning point in your life you just need someone to make you realize that what you will go thru will all be worth it. Right now that random conversation with Kat really gave a tap on the back and sort of relieve as well. Probably that was one of the reason why God let me watch the intern's case inspite all the negative stuffs that happened yesterday. On the other hand, watching how the presentors presented their case made me miss presenting case reports. Soon... For now, boards muna.

Congrats guys! (:

I have this weird feeling of wanting to pack my stuffs already for review... and I still have ~3 weeks of hospital works to do. :l

Friends beyond any doubt...

Journey to PLE Journal #16

Met kuya Webster today. He successfully bag the top 3 spot last February and he was the top notcher of our batch (proud friend here. :D)

I am just so happy that even though I do not ask him for his review materials he volunteered to lend them to me. Such a sweetie. Plus, I am just so thankful that he is willing to help me with studying even though we're quite miles apart. He told me that I can always text or call him if ever.

I will always thank the Lord that he made me meet great people during my med journey as well as giving me a brother in Web's persona who's always willing to help and support me just like a biological brother. Feel so blessed (and pressured as well).

His materials are so bulky... Hopefully, I can read and study all of it.

I wanted to post a photo of us but I have none. He told me that he will not take a photo with me unless I pass the PLE on August. Mind you, for such a photo addict his condition successfully threaten me. At least I have something to be excited with. By August I'll be meeting him again and by then we'll have a photo together... with OUR license. Yay!

Stay Focused

Journey to PLE Journey No. 15

"Fall in love with boredom.
Fall in love with repetition and practice.
Fall in love with the process of what you do and let the results take care of themselves."

Found this article in twitter. A friend of mine retweet its site and I fortunately clicked it and read thru the whole article. The writer, James Clear, wrote about how to remain focused on your goal even though at times the work seems like a routine already. This is a must read... Definitely worth some of your time.

by James Clear

We all have goals and dreams, but it can be difficult to stick with them.

Each week, I hear from people who say things like, “I start with good intentions, but I can’t seem to maintain my consistency for a long period of time.”

Or, they will say, “I struggle with mental endurance. I get started but I can’t seem to follow through and stay focused for very long.”

Don’t worry. I’m just as guilty of this as anyone else.

For example, I’ll start one project, work on it for a little bit, then lose focus and try something else. And then I’ll lose focus on my new goal and try something else. And on and on. When everything is said and done, I’ve stopped and started so many times that I never really made much progress.

Maybe you have felt this way too.

This problem reminds me of a lesson I learned while working out one day…

The Myth of Passion and Motivation

On this particular day in the gym, there was a coach visiting who had worked with thousands of athletes over his long career, including some nationally-ranked athletes and Olympians.

I had just finished my workout when I asked him, “What’s the difference between the best athletes and everyone else. What do the really successful people do that most people don’t?”

He briefly mentioned the things that you might expect. Genetics. Luck. Talent.

But then he said something I wasn’t expecting.

At some point,” he said, “it comes down to who can handle the boredom of training every day and doing the same lifts over and over and over again.

That piece of advice surprised me because it’s a different way of thinking about work ethic.

Most of the time people talk about getting motivated and “amped up” to work on their goals. Whether it’s business or sports or art, you will commonly hear people say things like, “it all comes down to having enough passion.”

As a result, I think many people get depressed when they lose focus or motivation because they think that successful people have some unstoppable passion and willpower that they seem to be missing. But that’s exactly the opposite of what this coach was saying.

Instead, he was saying that really successful people feel the same boredom and the same lack of motivation that everyone else feels. They don’t have some magic pill that makes them feel ready and inspired every day. But the difference is that the people who stick with their goals don’t let their emotions determine their actions. Top performers still find a way to show up, to work through the boredom, and to embrace the daily practice that is required to achieve their goals.

According to him, it’s this ability to do the work when it’s not easy that separates the top performers from everyone else. That’s the difference between professionals and amateurs.

Working When Work Isn’t Easy

Anyone can work hard when they feel motivated.

When I was an athlete, I loved going to practice the week after a big win. Who wouldn’t? Your coach is happy, your teammates are pumped up, and you feel like you can beat anyone. As an entrepreneur, I love working when customers are rolling in and things are going well. Getting results has a way of propelling you forward.

But what about when you’re bored? What about when the work isn’t easy? What about when it feels like nobody is paying attention or you’re not getting the results you want?

Are you willing to work through 10 years of silence?

It’s the ability to work when work isn’t easy that makes the difference.

It’s Not the Event, It’s the Process

All too often, we think our goals are all about the result. We see success as an event that can be achieved and completed.

Here are some common examples…

  • Many people see health as an event: “If I just lose 20 pounds, then I’ll be in shape.”
  • Many people see entrepreneurship as an event: “If we could get our business featured in the New York Times, then we’d be set.”
  • Many people see art as an event: “If I could just get my work featured in a bigger gallery, then I’d have the credibility I need.”
  • Those are just a few of the many ways that we categorize success as a single event.

But if you look at the people who are consistently achieving their goals, you start to realize that it’s not the events or the results that make them different. It’s their commitment to the process. They fall in love with the daily practice, not the individual event.

What’s funny, of course, is that this focus on the process is what will allow you to enjoy the results anyway…

If you want to be a great writer, then having a best-selling book is wonderful. But the only way to reach that result is to fall in love with the process of writing.

If you want the world to know about your business, then it would be great to be featured in Forbes magazine. But the only way to reach that result is to fall in love with the process of marketing.

If you want to be in the best shape of your life, then losing 20 pounds might be necessary. But the only way to reach that result is to fall in love with the process of eating healthy and exercising consistently.

If you want to become significantly better at anything, you have to fall in love with the process of doing it. You have to fall in love with building the identity of someone who does the work, rather than merely dreaming about the results that you want.

In other words…

Fall in love with boredom. Fall in love with repetition and practice. Fall in love with the process of what you do and let the results take care of themselves.

Pressure? What Pressure?

Journey to PLE Journal # 14

Probably because it is almost less than 5 months before the most awaited exam of my medicine career my licensed doctors were reminding me to study already.

Text message from my friend who I have worked with in the hospital

Twitter message from my classmate, seatmate and
study buddy in med school. (;

It was just so coincidental that both of them became concerned about my review on the same day. Plus, they even deviate to that conversation matter even though that is not the initial subject of our conversation.

Hayst, having friends who care and make you feel loved are definitely one of God's precious gift. I just pray that they will continuously check on me, remind me and push me tp study up to the completion of this examination.

Study Scheme

Journey to PLE Journal # 13

Usually, I do schedules whenever I have a task at hand but my utmost problem is to stick to my schedule. Believe it or not I was doing a review schedule for my board exams since October 2013 and I feel like I haven’t even finished something. Since I sort of have 1 and a half month left before the start of my formal review classes I have to somehow browse thru my books so that I will not be left clueless during my class. One and a half month is too short for studying what I have studied for 3 years in formal lectures… I should really start reading plus I don’t really want to cram for this exam even though that is probably what I do best during my student days… Hayst! This is way too crucial for me. I must get that 6 digits by August!!!

Again, I am proposing a schedule for myself and hopefully I’ll be able to stick to this one…

I prefer to study Biochemistry, OB-Gyn, MicroPara, Legal Medicine and Preventive Medicine first because for me Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Pharma are directly related to each other and it will be better if I study them simultaneously. Also, the first 5 subjects are lighter to study than the latter 7 subjects.

Regarding review materials, I do not have much review materials so I’ll probably start with my lecture notes since I still have some of them plus I’ll try to study pretest. Though, here’s a list of the review materials that I used during my medicine school proper and for my comprehensive exam.

ANATOMY
  • Clinical Anatomy Review by Snell (very good review material)

PHYSIOLOGY
  • BRS Physiology (again, another good review material… definitely a must read.)

BIOCHEMISTRY
  • Digging up the bones

MICROPARA
  • Digging Up the Bones
  • USMLE

PATHOLOGY
  • BRS Pathology

PHARMACOLOGY
  • Katzung and Trevor’s Review of Pharmacology (very informative book but I had a hard time reading it)

MEDICINE
  • Hi Yield Medicine
  • Harrison’s Study Guide Questions

PEDIATRICS
  • Blueprints Pediatrics

SURGERY
  • Surgery Recall

OB GYNE
  • Blueprints OB Gyne

Of course I was not able to read all of those books (I am not geek!) But, somehow they helped me during my medicine proper days specially when I do not have enough time to read the mother book (specially Patho!) But among all those reviewers what I highly recommend is the BRS Physiology. It will definitely help you understand Physio better. I do not use any reviewer for Preventive Medicine and Legal Medicine. I rely on my lecture notes and power point presentations for that.

I’ll probably post an entry regarding review materials once I’m done and over with my board exam (or when I find some during my review) but for now I’ll probably settle with what I have.

Wish me luck!

This is basically the same template as my version 1. I just edited few codes and add more icons and blog pets as well (see bottom of page). But then my scatterbrain still needs her notepad so I'm sticking with this. (:

Feel free to browse thru my musings/rants/escapades as I tour around my country (and hopefully beyond)... Enjoy! :)
