Having merienda with Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe: Mama Chit’s Coffee House

My parents heard about this restaurant in a local TV show and since it was near our area we decided to take a look at their place however it was so jam-packed during that time that we decided to come back some other time and that time is now.

OVERVIEW:
This place is located near the church of Our Lady of the Abandoned and the Shoe Museum in Marikina.
Our Lady of the Abandoned Church

Side walk of the Shoe Museum

Riding the gigantic stiletto... Cool! :)
For visitors with vehicle you can park your vehicle at the church then walk your way on the restaurant. For commuters, you can ride a jeep at the jeepney terminal under the Katipunan flyover. The jeepney will take you to the city center. Just ask the jeepney driver if they will pass by the church of Our Lady of the Abandoned-San Roque.

SERVICE:
I can say that their service improved as compared to the first time we went there. During our first visit they warn each and every customer that the order will take about 45 minutes to 1 and ½  hour to be served but now they were able to serve our orders in approximately 20 to 30 minutes in spite the numerous customers. And their servers were friendly too.

THE PLACE:
Upon reaching the coffee house this is what welcomed us.
Wacky burger shot. So cute! :)
And the house is full of antiques. It was like a museum of memorabilia and Coca-Cola merchandise. It is so nice- picturesque that is.
Counter shot :)

Queuing... Look at the old soda cans on their ceiling

Marilyn Monroe

Elvis Presley

Old slot machine and lampara

This is so cool... Old iron :)

Old ice shaver. I think we had this when I'm younger

Old converse shoes

Memorabilia of a lady taken in black and white

Old pharmacy signage. Cool! :)

FOODIES:
So we queued for our food and it was served after a while. We ordered for a family burger, creamy pesto and carbonara.

Family Burger (Php 600)

Mama Chit's family Burger. This is so overwhelming and mouthwatering.
It was even bigger than the one that we ate at Cebu Casa Verde. So yummy! :)
The family burger is humongous. It can be eaten by 4-8 persons and be very filled. I think they use wheat bread for their burger that makes it even more tummy filling.

Mama Chit's Carbonara (Php 150)

Mama Chit's Creamy Pesto (Php 150)
The creamy pesto is really creamy but I like the carbonara better.

My tummy, as well as my family’s, was so satisfied. ^_______^ Kudos to Mama Chit's.

This is indeed a must visit. By the way, I agree with the local show host when she said that this place served the best burgers because so far their version of family burger is really something.

Love for Cakes: Conti's Bakeshop and Restaurant

I was introduced to this restaurant way back last year and I really enjoyed their food specially their cakes. I am always looking forward to having their cakes ever since but their branches were far from our place so I rarely dine in there.

Earlier this year, my friends and I used to hang out at Robisons’ Magnolia and fortunately Conti's also had a branch there. We promised each other to dine on the restaurant on our next visit on the mall and walah, that day is now (after 7 months) and of course we delight in their cakes for dinner.

OVERVIEW:
Conti's is located at the ground floor of Robinsons’ Magnolia. Its entrance, however, was not located on the mall per se but rather facing Dona Hemady Street.

SERVICE:
They have very visible service crew. They are also attentive to our wants which made me smile. Well, we only ordered for cake slices and a pasta so they have not done much work on us.

FOODIES:
I did not order for their famous Mango Bravo since I have tried it before. I, as well as my friends, opt to try other cakes so we take their Viennese Mocha Torte, Bananalicious Pie and Mango Tart.

Mango Tart for Php 80
Sweet pie crust filled with vanilla cream and chunks of fresh ripe mangoes
topped with mango slices (from contis.ph)
Their mango tart was delicious. It is a cream filled cake that matches the generous amount of mango slices on top of it. Plus, the crust was so delicious.

Bananlicious Pie for Php 90
Buttery crust filled with vanilla cream and chunks of ripe bananas topped
with cashew nuts, chocolate and caramel syrups on whipped
cream icing (from contis.ph)
My friend wanted to have frozen bananas on her cake so she take the Bananalicious Pie. The cake was so yummy. It also has a yummy crust which taste like mango tart's crust. Frozen bananas are so delicious.

Viennese Mocha Torte for Php 115
Layers of mocha-flavored mousse, wafer and moist choco
cake coated with rich mocha butter cream icing topped
with almond sticks finished with chocolate ganache
(from contis.ph)
Last, but not the least, is the Viennese Mocha Torte. I think it has the same slice size as that of the Mango Bravo. It was made mostly of chocolate but not the very sweet one. What I like most about this cake is its icing. I rarely ate icings but this was different because it is mocha flavored and I believe it has a high caffeine content which rubbed my sleepiness away. Its icing was also garnished with almonds and I love almonds a lot which made the icing more appealing for me.

I really recommend this restaurant for foodies like me. Nothing beats a great dessert at the end of a tiring day!  So satisfy your cravings for desserts the Conti's way.

Perfect Match: Mami and Siopao from Ma Mon Luk

Remember these lines:
“Nang abutan ng gutom
si Juan de la Cruz
tumapat sa Ma Mon Luk
inamoy ang mami siopao lumpia pansit
hanggang sa mabusog.”
_from Jose Lacaba’s “ Ang mga Kagilagilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Juan de la Cruz”

Ever since I have always read about this restaurant but I have never tried dining in it. My parents used to buy their huge siopao as pasalubong when they come to pass by the area. Fortunate for me I went with my dad at Banaue, Quezon City and the place where he went was about 4-5 street away from Quezon Ave so we pass by the restaurant for early lunch.

OVERVIEW:
One of Ma Mon Luk’s branch is located at 408 Quezon Avenue, Doña Josefa, Quezon City. They are open daily from 9 AM to 10:00 PM

FOODIES:
I ordered for a beef mami and a bola bola siopao.
Beef Mami for Php 115
The beef mami was so authentic. I had tasted a real Chinese noodles and this one is made almost the same. It was indeed delicious. For those who’s craving for soup and egg noodles this one is definitely the one that you must try.

Chicken Siopao for Php 60
As for the siopao. It is so huge. One siopao can satisfy two people seriously. The siopao coupled with their Ma Mon Luk’s siopao sauce. Superb! :)

Those stores at Binondo serve delicious Chinese foods as well but I must say that nothing beats the Ma Mon Luk’s dishes that never ages in spite time.

Casa Naimas

So I was delegated by my mom to fix my sister’s Philhealth reimbursement papers and one of the task that I must do is to visit her agency at Chino Roces, Quezon City. On the way to her agency I passed by a Filipino Restaurant that serve Ilocano foods and so I was enticed.

OVERVIEW:

Casa Naimas is situated at 5 Tomas Morato corner Kamuning Road, Laging Handa, Quezon City. I am not really knowledgeable about the various ways to go to their place but since I am from Gateway, Cubao, Quezon City what I did was to take the overpass from Aurora to EDSA then ride a jeepney to Chino Roces. The jeepney passes by the restaurant. It is at the right side of the road before McDonald’s and UCC café just before. It is approximately 30 minutes jeepney ride.

SERVICE:
I have only met one server and she apparently she was also the cashier who took my order. She was very accommodating and she served my order fast which is a plus point for them since I was really hungry during that time.

FOODIES:

As their tarpaulin says, they serve Ilocos Empanada, Bagnet, Longganisa and Bibingka.

I ordered their combo meal and an ilocos empanada.
The Combo Meal Php 150

The combo which serve bagnet and longganisa combined. It was really delicious and plentiful. I had a hard time eating it since the serving was plenty.

Special Ilocos Empanada Php 50

The Ilocos empanada was another delicious treat. I really love ilocos empanada and I was hoping to taste the one that is really from Ilocos since all that I have tried where from the metro. But their ilocos empanada is a must try.

If you came to pass by their place I truly suggest that you try their food. A budget of 100 – 250 is enough to fulfill your hungry tummy.

Frank's Bulaluhan Tanay, Rizal

In spite of the heavy rainfall due to Maring’s habagat we still manage to go to Tanay, Rizal to visit Regina Rica. On the way to Regina Rica we had our lunch on a restaurant/carinderia along the road, Frank’s Bulaluhan.

OVERVIEW:
Frank’s Bulaluhan is situated in Barangay Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal front of Pranjetto Hills Hotel and Resort.  To get to the place take the Marcos Highway and run through the road towards the east passing Sta. Lucia Mall, and Masinag Market. Follow the road until you arrive in Tanay. It is along the left side of the highway before you reach the town proper of Barangay Sampaloc.

According to the owner this has been the famous stop over of motorcycle riders. The place was also featured in the mo2rista magazine earlier this year.

SERVICE:
The owner welcome us with his pets. Since it is raining hard during that time we are the only costumers and they have served us very well. Their household pets were friendly too. :)

FOODIES:
We had lunch in the area and we ordered for bulalo and pancit canton.

I failed to get the prices for the food but it was way cheaper than that found in the metro or in the city area. The bulalo was really superb. I like their bulalo better than that in Tagaytay actually.

The pancit canton was ok for me. I am not really a pancit canton fan and I somehow like it slightly dry. However, they do their pancit canton oily and saucy. But it unlike the other pancit canton they put a lot of vegetables and meat on it which makes it delightful.

My parents and I enjoyed our stay at Frank’s Bulaluhan. We enjoy the food as well as the stories told by the owner himself. It was indeed a pleasurable experience for me and I will surely come back to their place soon.

Wildflour Cafe + Bakery: Cronuts!!! :D

So everybody is craving for the so called “cronuts or croughnuts” that even popular personalities are constantly posting pictures and tweets about this new food crave. In lieu with this I then decided to a bite of this new food crave last week at Wildflour Café + Bakery at The Podium, Mandaluyong.

Ok, I know that this product is so in demand that I went to the shop early (approximately 30 minutes from the store opening) and to my surprise they had the entire first batch sold. So they advised me to return at the store by 1PM for another set of freshly baked cronuts… and so I did return at 12:30 PM thinking that I have to be there early or else I will not be able to have the cronuts (again). At 12:30 PM they already have a couple of individuals in line waiting for the cronuts. So I did fall in line joining the others.

I had a random conversation with the individuals falling in front and behind me. Apparently, the one in front of me was a regular costumer already. She told me that I should try Chocolate and Vanilla flavor but the best flavor according to her was the Dulce de Leche however it was pricier.  I, as well as the one behind me, were first timers so we were somehow curious about this product. He then asked what’s the difference between a cronut and a regular doughnut. She (the one in front of us) then replied that she does not know also but we have to try it. It was way more delectable daw.

Vanilla Cronuts at Wildflour Cafe + Bakery (Php 120)
So, being naïve as I am, I believe her and tried the dulce de leche (photo below) and vanilla (photo above) cronuts. I think the one behind me also bought the same products. :)

Dulce de Leche Cronut at Wildflour Cafe + Bakery (Php 150)
Both of them were superb. They have this unique taste that you will definitely make you smile after taking the first bite. It will even make you crave for more. However, I am not much of a sweet tooth (and dulce de leche is sooo sweet) so I almost consumed most of their water. One cronut for me is enough but then since I wanted to try both flavors I ate half of each and bring home the other half and shared it with my mom and sister. Both of them liked it so much. So, if given a chance to go back to Mandaluyong again I will visit and buy cronuts from Wildflour again. :)

Random Notes:
  • Cronuts in Wildflour are sold with limits of 3 cronuts/costumers
  • It is gone in no time so be sure to fall in line earlier than the stated time of product release
  • Wildflour Café + Bakery also sell other products like muffins and crookies (croissant and cookies) which are also delicious and tummy filling

  • I haven’t tried cronuts from other stores so I cannot compare and comment as to whether what I had were the most delicious. But, what I can say is that the cronuts that I have tasted were so finely made that I believe other stores will have a hard time beating my baseline. :)

Kanto Freestyle Breakfast

I used to believe that no matter how costly a food maybe as long as its taste qualifies for its price I’ll go for it. However, Kanto Freestyle Breakfast proved that there are still gourmet foods that will satisfy your taste buds yet not be that costly.

OVERVIEW:
Kanto Freestyle Breakfast is situated at 549 San Joaquin St., Barangay Plainview, Mandaluyong City. It is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from the MRT Boni Station depending on the traffic flow.

It is a karinderya (yes, with the flies) that is situated at the side of the street. Their parking place was the street itself and there’s not much tables and chairs. Is the area easy to find? No! You can definitely miss it. I was actually lost the first time that I went to the area. I even asked for directions on the market area near the place and they do not know where Kanto Freestyle Breakfast is (in spite of it being televised and publicly advertised). So, if you will be going to their place - when you reach San Joaquin Street, the karinderya was opposite the street where you find the South Star Drug and Tapsilogan. This is how their place looks like.

SERVICE:
Oh well, I arrived at their area for lunch and there are a lot of costumers during that time so they run out of garlic rice and they warned me before ordering that the food will take about 30 – 40 minutes to be served. And alas, it took them 40 minutes. Before I went to their place I was forewarned about their slow service so it did not bother me that much. On the positive note, the servers were nice. They try to attend to your needs even though there are a lot of costumers so kudos to them. (insert smiley here)

FOODIES:
Blueberry pancake (Php 90)
Originally, what they serve is mixed berry, berry pancake but since the server informed me that it was a mixture of strawberry and blueberry (and I don’t eat strawberries) I asked them if I can modify my order and they gladly adapt.

So, my blueberry pancake was first served and all I can say is that it is truly better that iHOP. The presentation of the food was nice. Furthermore, I was expecting that they will lessen the toppings of my pancake since it was originally a mixture of strawberry and blueberry but no, they put a lot of blueberries on the pancake and their pancakes were so fluffy. They served 3 pancakes for every order and that is definitely tummy filling.

Since I am taking my time while eating my pancakes I sort of played with it and it’s toppings. Happy pancakes for a happy foodie.
Batangas Beef Tapa (Php 90)
Next served was my Batangas Beef Tapa. I have ordered this because I thought that I will not be satisfied with the pancake alone (since most of the pancakes that were served in restaurants/karinderya were air filled). I had a hard time eating this for I have a full tummy. But, it was so delicious and again the food was too much for its cost. I do enjoyed eating it very much.

Feeling hungry now? They serve breakfast for 24 hours so if you happen to be near the area I do recommend that you try eating there. Their products are definitely not overrated. You’ll definitely have no regrets.

This is basically the same template as my version 1. I just edited few codes and add more icons and blog pets as well (see bottom of page). But then my scatterbrain still needs her notepad so I'm sticking with this. (:

Feel free to browse thru my musings/rants/escapades as I tour around my country (and hopefully beyond)... Enjoy! :)
